Volunteering on Concert Night is a great opportunity for people that cannot make it to our regular meetings but still want to help out. And remember, whether you volunteer behind the scenes or on concert nights, all volunteers receive reserved seating at concerts.

Read the job descriptions below and decide which job is best for you. If you are interested in one of these jobs for the Spring Concerts, email the Music Boosters, or check back here when we are closer to those dates.

Uniform Checkers

Uniform Checkers should arrive at Howard High School by 6:10 pm on "concert night," go to the warm-up room (usually the band room and the chorus room), and examine students as they arrive at Howard to make sure of the following:
  • The student is wearing the music department t-shirt.
  • The student is wearing black shoes.

Reception Set Up / Clean Up
("Hospitality Team")

Immediately following the concert, there will be a reception in the Howard Cafeteria.  To make this run smoothly we need volunteers to:
  • Go to the cafeteria at 6:10 pm
  • Decide which tables to use for snacks and which tables for water
  • Distribute snacks and water as families bring their donations to you
  • Alert a Music Booster if you feel we do not have enough snacks, water, napkins, or plates.
  • Return to the cafeteria just before the end of the concert (usually this means you should leave just before the last piece is performed; this is a good job for families that do not have a student in the 7/8 Band)
  • Unwrap items and get them ready for serving
  • Chaperon the snack tables as people choose their desserts
  • Politely remind early guests to be considerate of others and only take a small portion
  • As items are used up, throw away containers
  • Help clean up at the end of the reception

Decoration Crew - Winter Concerts

For the Winter Concerts, one Decoration Crew member will need a large vehicle to:
  • Go to the greenhouse at the Applications and Research Lab at 3:15 pm (10920 Clarksville Pike, Ellicott City, MD 21042)
  • Pick up 25 poinsettias designated for Bonnie Branch Middle School
  • Drive the poinsettias immediately to Howard High School
  • Park on the road/driveway that runs down the right side of the auditorium
  • Enter the auditorium through the side door
  • Arrange the poinsettias in a pleasing manner on the edge of the stage
  • Arrange the faux evergreen "swag" in front of the poinsettias
  • Arrange the clear lights on the evergreen and plug in the lights

Ushers

Ushers should arrive at Howard High School by 6:10 pm on "concert night" and stay in the lobby outside of the auditorium.  Here the tasks that need to be completed by the team of ushers:
  • Set up the Welcome Table (usually one person volunteers to bring a table and chairs)
  • Display the donation container on the Welcome Table
  • Stand by the door into the auditorium and hand out programs and ShopWithScrip fundraiser flyers
  • Stand or sit behind the welcome table, greeting people and thanking them for donations
  • Direct students to the warm-up room
  • Direct families with snacks to the cafeteria
  • Sell Bonnie Branch Music magnets ($5 each)

Road Crew

Road Crew members need large vehicles to help transport instruments, equipment, and stage decorations before and after the concert. These are the expectations:
  • Arrive at BONNIE BRANCH at 3:00 pm with a mini van or SUV.
  • Go to the Band/Orchestra room
  • The Band and Orchestra Directors will tell you which items need to be transported to Howard
  • After your vehicle is full, drive from Bonnie Branch to Howard High.
  • Park on the road/driveway that runs down the right side of the auditorium
  • Enter the auditorium through the side door
  • Place instruments and equipment on the stage at Howard
  • For the Winter Concerts, please bring the decorations from Bonnie Branch and leave them on the stage
  • Please also bring a blue table cloth from the Boosters supply closet and give it to the Ushers when you arrive

If you are also transporting water, napkins, and plates from Bonnie Branch, please deliver these to the cafeteria.  You should drive, because the cafeteria is on the complete opposite side of the school from the auditorium!
